Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras

I was determined to love this lens based on the specs and price point alone. Canon really needed to come out with this lens at this price because Nikon offers a very decent Vibration Reduction lens at roughly the same range for the same price, leaving me to make apologies for Canon and their neglect to all my Nikon friends.

The IS can be switched off to save battery life but I haven’t noticed a difference in battery performance with it. The IS is only activiated when you press the shutter halfway for auto focus. Although it FEELS like there is a small lag for the IS to start, I don’t think I’ve had any photos messed up because of it.

You can HEAR the IS. A little bizarre after using point and shoots that have IS that is silent, but it doesn’t seem to affect performance

Pro: Great price for an image stabilized zoom lens. I paid 299 and am very pleased even though Amazon is selling it for 280 a week later. ALso arrive 2 months sooner than Amazon initially promised. This lens has NEVER been 400 dollars. Its MSRP from Canon prior to release was 299.00. Shame Amazon!

Pro: Images are very sharp.

Pro: Image stabilization does a VERY nice job. Four stops as advertised by Canon? I’m not so sure. GREATLY enhancing the composition experience at 250mm? Absolutely.

Pro: Much smaller and lighter than the 70-300 of any manufacturer and much sharper than my Sigma 70-300.

Con: Cheapish feel. But just use it, quit feeling it already. Plastic mount. But if you NEED a metal mount, may I suggest you are being a little rough with your camera. *UPDATE* The plastic flanges on back were able to hold the camera securely to the lens, but NOT hold the rear cap securely to the lens. I’ve tried many different rear lens caps that fit snugly on other lenses. So I think this is beyond cheap feel and has to be called CHEAP BUILD.

Con: This lens is a little (ok, maybe not so little) slow to focus in dim light, sometimes it misses altogether when I think other lenses of mine would have had no difficulty.

Con: I never gave Inner Focusing much thought on my other lenses until I used this. The front of this lens rotates AND moves in and out a LOT while focusing, so much so that you MAY even want to recompose your shot. The length of this lens changes almost an inch across the focus range. I just checked my Sigma 70-300 and found that it does also, but I’ve never seen it make as much difference in the viewfinder as I have with this Canon. Your perception may vary.

This lens and the soon to be arriving 18-55 IS as the XSi kit lens will allow me to carry one less lens to achieve an 18-250 IS range. For a little more money than the cost of both lenses you can get the Tamrom 18-250 but not have Image Stabilization. And now Sigma has an 18-200 WITH Optical Stablization for about what these 2 lenses cost retail, but in testing the 2 Canons produced better images.

Conclusion: A great EF-S lens for Canon users. (even if Nikon had to force Canon to make it for us.)

This telephoto zoom lens is designed with Canon’s Optical Image Stabilizer technology while retaining compactness and lightness, in response to demands of photographers. This high zoom ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88-400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses), and the image stabilizer effect equivalent to a shutter speed about 4 stops faster than the same size lens without Image Stabilizer. In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you could formerly hold a 250mm lens steadily was 1/250th of a second, with Canon’s 4-stop stabilization correction, you could hand-hold at shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second. I got this camera as a graduation gift 5 years ago. Since then I’ve taken it everywhere with me and it’s been dropped, soy sauce has been spilled on it (made the lens sticky but eventually wore off), and it’s been to countless concerts, road trips and even over to england with me for a month. I’ve taken more pictures than I can count and have never had a problem with it!

The swivel LCD screen is what really makes this camera special. Throughout my 5 years I’ve seen only a few people that have the same thing. It makes taking a group picture quicker and I never want a camera without the swivel screen!

This camera is very dependable, very unique, and very easy to use. There’s a lot of picture options for those who have a more in-depth knowledge of cameras, and if you don’t know much, just leave it on a setting and the pictures come out wonderful!

Optics and Resolution
The PowerShot A80 offers a 4-megapixel CCD sensor that produces images up to 2272 x 1704 pixels for photo-quality 11 x 14 inch enlargements. Movie Mode

You can record for up to 3 minutes per clip in either resolution. Note that you cannot use the optical zoom when in movie mode. The included 32 MB memory card can hold 91 seconds of video at the highest setting.

More Features

Printing
Canon has introduced a series of printers designed to work directly with its lineup of digital cameras. Using these printers, no computer is required–simply connect the camera to the printer and start printing. Printers include Canon’s bubble jet direct printers i900D and i960, and card photo printer CP-200 and CP-300. Of course, photos from your camera can also be printed on any home computer system with an inkjet printer, sent off for online processing, or simply enjoyed on your computer screen.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on CompactFlash Type I memory cards; a 32 MB card is included. When shooting in Large/Normal mode, you can store 54 images on the included memory card. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB 1.1, which means the camera can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Power and Size
The camera is powered by 4 AA batteries (alkalines included, NiMH rechargeables recommended). It measures 4.1 by 2.5 by 1.4 inches and weighs 8.8 ounces (excluding battery).

outstanding product – Pir – Pakistan
I got this as my first digital camera in June 2004. Recomendation was from Ken Rockwell (www.kenrockwell.com). Have been very very satisfied with it and it has produced 1000s of wonderful photographs for me. 4 Megapix is all you need for 95% of the time and it has a larger sensor than most newer compacts, giving cleaner photos.

It takes CF cards (interchangeable with my dSLR), 4 AA batteries (easily available anywhere, giving it more flash power & longevity) and fits the hand well. I prefer it to my SD850 because I can also manually adjust everything.

Two years ago, the CCD gave out. Canon arranged to replace it free of charge (FANTASTIC SERVICE!!!), thus giving this old camera another lease of life.

Its now my vacation/outdoor/rough use camera.

I bought this in 2003 used it for years – it went to Europe and China with me. No problems ever, loved this camera- easy to use. I have taken many, many beautiful pictures using this camera. The articulated screen on it is something I miss on current “point-and-shoot” cameras, it is a great feature! It still works well although I have passed it along to another family member. I replaced it to get image stabilization, and would recommend you check out newer PowerShots for this feature. Actually, I have purchased several other cameras (with image stabilization) trying to find a camera that I like as much!

I love this camera, it is easily the best electronics purchase I have made in the last two years. I have dropped it off a moving bicycle onto asphalt, where it got run over by another bike, and only had a few scratches on the case for the experience. The waterproofing is great, it uses real rubber seals, unlike the junk Pentax I had before. I love this camera, and can’t recommend it enough… One of my friends bought one on my revommendation, and she feels the same about hers. I bought this camera, and honestly I used to love it. Strong construction and supposely Water proof. While snorkeling I got a “Card-Cover Open” message and the camera was dead. Google for this error message and you will find hundreds of frustrated user with the same dissapointing experience. Do not waste your money on this model for now, or at least get the Water-proof case…..

I bought this for a trip to South America since I had a relatively good experience with an earlier model of Olympus’s tough cameras (the 720SW). About 2 weeks into the trip the lens cover jammed open and the lens was immediately scratched. All of my pictures from that point on had a smudge from the scratched lens. The waterproofing didn’t work well. On a couple of occasions water entered the battery compartment – once while rafting (and being submerged no more than a foot at any given time) and then once while snorkeling in the ocean. The snorkeling finally killed the camera. Despite catastrophic failure of one of the camera’s selling points the customer service has been almost worthless. The camera did take good quality pictures and was easy to use, just don’t expect it to stand up to the elements any better than another point and shoot. I won’t be buying Olympus again.

This is quote a tough camera. Handles more than what is reasonable to digital cameras (drops, water, shaking etc.).
Picture quality good up to A3.
One thing to be aware off. Make sure to check the seals in battery compartments regularly as the slightest dust/dirt will let water into the camera (this could have been better constructed).

Kodak’s EasyShare CX7430 offers high-resolution image capture with fully automatic point-and-shoot simplicity. Optics and Resolution

Each time you click the shutter, the Kodak Color Science Chip performs an instantaneous and advanced analysis of collected scene data to identify and correct multiple factors that influence picture quality. Scene light source is detected and adjustments are made to capture bright whites and true, vivid colors under difficult lighting conditions–fluorescent, tungsten or daylight. Horrible Horrible HORRIBLE! – Sophie –
When I received this camera, I understood it had been used previously. What I did not expect was to find battery erosion in the battery compartment. I also did not get the memory card as promised. I’m highly dissatisfied.

This was an OK camera and did basically what it was supposed to do. Found the battery pack didn’t last very long and the dock setup bulky. The camera itself was functional, although not terribly responsive. I owned it about 2.5 years and got about 2 years of reliable use. Doesn’t seem that great a deal over the long haul.

This is my first touch-screen camera. I chose it because of the rare color and compact size. I really love this camera. It’s light-weight so I can carry it with me everywhere. It has its own internal memory too, so I don’t have to spend more money on memory card. The picture quality is great, I can zoom in and crop photos without ruining the quality. I saw some people in here said that they weren’t that pleased, but really…you wouldn’t expect a fine DSLR quality from a point-and-shot camera, would you? It’s also easy to use, I managed to master it without the tutorial book in no time. If you want to transfer your photos and videos, you just need to connect the camera to computer with the USB cable provided and use it like how you use a normal flash disk. You can also edit pictures, draw and write, even do scrapbook right on the camera. The video quality is nice as well, I often use it to record cover videos and upload to Youtube. This is really a perfect choice for people who wants good quality and nice-looking gadget at the same time.. ^^

This is a terrific little camera. The greatest asset for me is the ability to take super closeup shots with amazing detail. In fact this is the third DSC-T series camera that I have owned. Sadly this is also the last DSC-T series camera that I will ever purchase (possibly last Sony product).

Both DSC-T1 and DSC-T7 bot had unlimited video capture ability. Basically the video file could be as large as the available memory space. However, DSC-T2 has an arbitrary time limit of 10 minutes per clip.

This is the official statement from Sony’s web site:

The recording time for a movie is limited to approximately 10 minutes. Therefore, the recording is automatically stopped when the time reaches nearly 10 minutes.

I love this camera! – kissyoursuzy –
I’m not very technical and I don’t generally take great pictures — but it is impossible to take a bad picture with this camera! Everyone looks great in their pictures! The touch screen and the pink color are great bonuses. It appears to be pretty durable too, I’ve dropped it a couple times and I even spilled liquid on it once… but it still works great!

My girlfriend asked for a compact camera that took pictures quickly. Fast lag time is not a compact camera’s strong point but I did research and this is the the second fastest camera out there. I found a good deal and ordered. The only camera available was in this bright, hot pink that my girlfriend really dislikes but its a great camera and the vendor gave me excatly what I asked for in time for christmas.
